The national bird died after being manhandled by the villagers in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Sunday. The villagers wanted to click selfies with it but instead they ended up killing the endangered bird, a source reported. wildlife warden Seema Chowdhury said, “We are investigating to find out what happened. What the villagers did was obviously not right. We are trying to find out how the bird fell ill.”
On Sunday, a peacock entered the premises of Bharigori gram panchayat area of Dhupguri block. The villagers were stunned to see a peacock and many of them wanted to take selfie pics with it.
Allegedly, some of the villagers pulled the bird’s legs, some pulled its feathers and others tugged at its crest, which reasoned to the death of the national bird. Police officers told media persons that the bird died on its way to police station. Later, the carcass of the bird was handed over to the forest authorities. The police and forest department officials have started a probe in the case.

In 2016, a similar case was reported when an endangered baby dolphin, which is only 30,000 left in the world, died due to a crazy mob who wanted to click selfies with it. In other cases in Macedonia, a woman pulled a swan from the lake to click a perfect social media worthy selfie.
Later, the woman left the swan on the beach to die. Similar cases were reported in India, in May this year, in an attempt to click a selfie with an injured bear, a man lost his life in southern Odisha. Another tourist injured an elephant to click a perfect selfie in November last year.
