The 94 km Mumbai-Pune expressway is highly mishap zone where a number of accidents are reported. The expressway is unsafe with various cases of accidents and mishaps where 31 people have been killed in past four months. In past few weeks, three people were killed where stationery vehicles were parked on the expressway.
As many as 55 mishaps were reported between January and February this year, where vehicles stationed were rammed into by other vehicles due to low-visibility or high speed.
Negligence of drivers when their vehicles break down resulted in massive mishaps on the expressway, Highway Security Force officials told. In the wake of many accident cases, experts have called for a list of dos and don’ts on the highway. Vehicle owners need to be more careful while driving at high speed to avoid fatal mishaps.

On May 31, two men died and two were severely injured on the expressway as a speeding van rammed into their parked truck after they stopped due to deflated tyre. In other cases on May 27, a man was helping another driver to change deflated tyres when he was knocked down by a tempo traveller at Lonavala on the expressway. The man died on the spot.
For self-safety, the passengers of the halted vehicle should not stand near the vehicle. Also, poor maintenance of cars also results in accidents or often breakdowns. Prashant Kakade, manager and coordinator at the management development centre (MDC) at a Pune-based central institute of road transport (CIRT) said, “If you look, 70-80 percent of vehicles have bald tyres.
People usually consider maintenance as a loss of money and often skip servicing of their vehicles. Over speeding, lane-cutting and drivers’ lack of control are also few reasons for such accidents.
