After Nipah virus, Kozhikode district of Kerala is gripped by the fear of Shigella bacteria. In a place called Puthuppady, a 2-year-old died after being infected with Shigella. It was Siyad, son of Harshad who died while his twin brother Sayan is still under treatment in Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

On July 18th, Siyad was admitted due to diarrhea in a private hospital but soon had to be shifted to Medical college as his condition worsened. Shigella can be passed through direct contact with the bacteria in the stool.

For example, this can happen in a child care setting when staff members don’t wash their hands well enough after changing diapers or helping toddlers with toilet training. Shigella bacteria also can be passed in contaminated food or by drinking or swimming in contaminated water.

Shigella was reported even before in Kerala. The effective way to stop this from spreading is by observing strict cleanliness.
