The Flood AfterMath: This is the Dismal Stat of Kuttanad’s Loss

Kuttanadu, one of the low lying areas of Kerala was one among the most affected places from the flood. The situation currently existing in Kuttanadu is like almost the entire Kuttanadu is living in the Distress Relief Camp. 90 percent of the population of Kuttanadu is forced to live in relief camps. While the entire focus of Kerala went to Chengannur, Kuttanadu silently suffered.

With a population of about 2 lakh in Kuttanadu, about 1.25 lakhs among them are in the camp. About 50000 people have taken shelter in their relatives home. Thousands of home have been damaged and needs a lot of repairs before anyone can think about living there again. In the entire Alappuzha district, about 2.77 lakh people are in distress relief camps. This is about 10 percent of the entire district’s population.

Most residents of Kuttanadu are currently in Chenganasery. A scarcity of food and essential items are felt here. In Kuttanadu, the water level rises very often and people are used to it. Because of this reason, perhaps enough stress wasn’t given to this place or the enormity of the situation wasn’t properly conveyed. In Vembanad lake, the water level rose by 90 cms. This is the first time the water level rose by that big a margin ever since the big flood that came in 1924.
