BRTS station collapsed; One killed and six laborers trapped

A four-year-old girl was killed and six laborers were trapped in the debris of an under-construction BRTS station that collapsed in Surat on Thursday.

The incident took place near Anuvrat Dwar BRTS junction on University Road, police said, adding that the infant Roshi Damor, was the daughter of one of the laborers, died at the spot.

The slab was being made as part of a canal beautification project. The incident took place when the laborers were working on the slab placed on a pillar. Chief fire officer of the Surat Municipal Corporation Basant Pareek said they received a call at around 12.55 pm. “The slab and the roof suddenly collapsed. One of the slabs fell on the child. The other laborers tried to rescue the child and ended up being trapped there,” said Pareek.

He said while the fire officials rescued the trapped laborers, it was too late for the child. The injured have been shifted to Civil Hospital where their condition is reported to be stable. The collapse also gave rise to rumors that a bridge which was under construction had collapsed.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known. Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi demanded action against the contractors.
