Landslide at the famous Durga Temple; several devotees trapped under the rubble

Landslide at the famous Kanaka Durga temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada on Wednesday has ensued panic among the devotees. Few devotees are suspected to be trapped under the debris and rescue and relief efforts are still underway. Several boulders rolled down on Indra Keeladri hills in Vijayawada on Wednesday, crushing a shed at the Kanaka Durga Temple. This further led to panic among devotees.

The incident comes hours before Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s visit to the hill shrine in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada. The celebration of the 10-day Dasara festival at the hill shrine began on October 17. Also known as Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanams (SDMSD), the temple opened its doors to devotees amid Covid-19 protocols. Only 1,000 devotees are being allowed to enter the temple each hour. CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is expected to offer ‘pattu vastrams’ to the deity at the shrine atop Indra Keeladri hills in Vijayawada. On this day, known as ‘Moola Nakshatram’, the goddess is worshipped as ‘Sri Saraswati Devi’.
