More than 200 Meiteis who fled Manipur violence return from Myanmar: CM

More than 200 Meiteis, who had sought refuge in Myanmar to escape ethnic violence in Manipur, have returned to the state, according to Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude for the Indian Army’s role in facilitating their safe return after more than three months.

Since May 3, clashes between Meiteis and Kukis in Manipur have resulted in over 160 fatalities and numerous injuries. Chief Minister N Biren Singh commended the Army’s efforts and credited them for ensuring the Meiteis’ return to their hometown.

In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister shared his relief and appreciation, stating that 212 fellow Indian citizens, all Meiteis, who had sought refuge across the Myanmar border due to the unrest in Moreh town, are now safely back in India.

The Chief Minister extended a special acknowledgment to the Indian Army, specifically mentioning the dedication of GOC (General Officer Commanding) Eastern Command, Lt Gen R P Kalita, GOC 3 Corps, Lt Gen HS Sahi, and the Commanding Officer of 5 AR, Col Rahul Jain, for their unwavering service.

The successful repatriation of these Meitei citizens stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Indian Army and the local authorities in ensuring their safe return to their homeland, following a period of violence and displacement.
