Know how to identify and handle deepfake AI videos

Mumbai: Artificial intelligence (AI)-generated fake videos have become common today. A  deepfake is a video of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else, typically used maliciously or to spread false information.

Deepfake videos use artificial intelligence to swap faces or alter videos, make it hard to tell what’s real. Deepfakes use a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning to create these deceptive image. Deepfake technology can create fictional photos, morphed videos or even voice clones. Detecting  deepfake videos is very tough.

A deepfake video featuring Bollywood actress Rashmika Mandanna has gone viral on social media. The video was originally posted by a British Indian, Zara Patel, on Instagram on October 9. A factcheck journalist Abhishek Kumar has revealed that the video is a fake one. The video has garnered over 18 million views on Kumar’s thread on X (formerly Twitter). In the thread, he shows both the deepfake video and the original video.

 

Here are some simple tips to identify deepfake videos:

To identify any AI-generated fake videos, always look for weird facial movements and expressions.

Deepfakes may look unnatural due to awkward posture, body proportions, or movements.

Carefully listen for audio that doesn’t match the person’s lips.

Check if the video fits the person’s usual behavior.

Verify the source for trustworthiness.

Look for any strange blurring or distortions.

Use deepfake detection tools when available.
