OpenAI, the organization responsible for the widely-used generative AI chatbot ChatGPT, has ousted its CEO, Sam Altman, following a formal review. The company alleges that Altman concealed information from the board, leading to a loss of confidence in his leadership abilities.
The decision to remove Altman was made after a thorough review by the board, which found that he was not consistently transparent in his communications, impeding the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities. While expressing gratitude for Altman’s contributions to OpenAI’s founding and growth, the board deemed new leadership necessary for the organization’s future.
Greg Brockman, the founder and president of OpenAI, announced his resignation in response to Altman’s departure, stating his pride in the collaborative achievements of the company over the past eight years.
Mira Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, has been appointed as the interim CEO as the company initiates a formal search for a permanent replacement. In a staff memo, Murati expressed being “honored and humbled” to take on the leadership role and emphasized the importance of staying focused on core values.
ChatGPT, launched in November the previous year, played a pivotal role in popularizing generative AI. Despite increased competition, the chatbot remains widely popular. OpenAI, financially supported by Microsoft, experienced a decline in Microsoft shares by 1.91% following the news of Altman’s removal.
Altman, known for engaging with heads of state on AI matters and testifying before the US Congress, expressed his appreciation for his time at OpenAI on X (formerly Twitter). He mentioned that he would share more about his future plans later.
OpenAI’s board of directors includes notable figures such as Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, OpenAI chief scientists Ilya Sutskever, tech entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner from the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology. Altman’s removal raises questions about the organization’s future direction and leadership in the field of artificial intelligence.
