Throughout her prolific career, Valsala garnered several literary accolades, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, Muttathu Varkey Award, and the CV Kunhiraman Memorial Sahitya Award.
In addition to her literary contributions, Valsala served as the chairperson of the Sahitya Akademi and was associated with the left-aligned cultural organization, Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangam. Some of her well-known works include “Nizhalurangunna Vazhikal,” “Nellu,” and “Kolli.” Valsala authored over 25 anthologies of short stories and 17 novels, showcasing her versatile literary prowess. Born on August 28, 1939, in Vellimaukunnu, she pursued her education at Kanjirathinkal LP School and Nadakavu Girls High School, later working at the same school where she studied. Valsala’s marriage to Appukkutty led them to Wayanad, providing the backdrop for her acclaimed work ‘Nellu,’ depicting the lives of tribal communities in the region. The novel was later adapted into a film by Ramu Kariat, with Valsala also contributing to the screenplay.
During her time in Wayanad, Valsala crossed paths with naxalite leader Varghese, whose tragic murder left a lasting impact on her experiences and interactions during that period.
