Ashwin praises Australia’s tactical brilliance in the final.

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin praised Australia’s exceptional tactical prowess that secured their record-extending sixth ICC World Cup title in the final against India. After two initial losses, Australia’s eight consecutive victories set the stage for the final, clinched by Travis Head’s brilliant 137.

Ashwin specifically commended Pat Cummins for his “tactical masterclass” in the final, highlighting his unique fielding setup and strategic bowling choices. Cummins, also the captain, played a pivotal role by taking key wickets, including those of Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli.

Contrary to expectations, Australia chose to bowl first, surprising Ashwin. However, he emphasized that this decision was rooted in a detailed analysis of the pitch’s black soil, known to favor evening batting.

Ashwin clarified that Australia’s victory was not due to luck but their outstanding tactics, stating, “Australia did not win because of destiny or luck. They were tactically outstanding in the final.” He observed the pitch’s characteristics and the Australian bowlers’ precision in restricting India to a below-par score of 240 runs.

Reflecting on his World Cup journey, Ashwin expressed surprise at playing only one match and shared insights from a conversation with Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey. Bailey explained Australia’s decision to bowl first, citing their experience with the pitch conditions in IPL and bilateral series.

Ashwin, who played the first league game against Australia, revealed his disappointment at his limited World Cup appearances, especially after anticipating a return against New Zealand in Dharamsala, which was disrupted by Hardik Pandya’s injury.
