Tejas fighter aircraft orders worth Rs 36,468 Cr placed during Modi govt: Officials

Official sources confirmed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an order amounting to Rs 36,468 crore has been placed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the delivery of 83 LCA Mk 1A Tejas aircraft. The Prime Minister visited the defense PSU and took a sortie in one of the fighter jets during this announcement. The scheduled delivery of these Tejas aircraft is set to commence by February 2024, highlighting the government’s significant strides in enhancing India’s defense preparedness and promoting indigenization, specifically through the Tejas fighter aircraft.

The first version of the Tejas aircraft was introduced into the Indian Air Force in 2016, and currently, two IAF squadrons operate fully with LCA Tejas. More than Rs 9,000 crore has been allocated for the development of LCA Mk 2, an advanced and more potent version of the Tejas aircraft. As part of the drive for increased indigenization, including the aircraft engine, technology transfer agreements for manufacturing the GE engine in India were negotiated with a US firm during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the country in June 2023. These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to bolstering India’s defense capabilities through indigenous advancements.
