Chennai rain claims seven lives, surpassing impact of 2015 great floods

Relentless rainfall, triggered by the approach of Cyclone Michaung, has relentlessly battered Chennai, surpassing the intensity witnessed during the notable floods of 2015. According to weather bloggers, key areas in the city recorded higher rainfall than in 2015, with Nungambakkam receiving 440mm in 36 hours, Meenambakkam 430mm, and Chembarbakkam 320mm. Tamil Nadu weatherman Pradeep John emphasized that the current situation represents a “perfect storm” and cautioned against directly comparing it to the events of 2015.

The repercussions of the deluge were severe, leaving parts of the city submerged, roads flooded, and some collapsing. Violent winds uprooted trees, turning streets into waterways with floating vehicles. Tragically, at least seven deaths have been reported, including an unidentified man aged around 70 found near the Vaidyanathan flyover. As the crisis unfolded, Chennai police confirmed five deaths across the city, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

In response to the calamity, the government declared December 5 as an additional public holiday, following an earlier announcement for December 4. All educational institutions and government offices will remain closed. Recognizing the impact on daily life, the state government has urged private establishments in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu to facilitate remote work on December 5, acknowledging the challenges posed by heavy rains.
