Road accidents in Punjab led to more fatalities than injuries in 2021, 2022: NCRB

Road accidents in Punjab resulted in more deaths than injuries in both 2021 and 2022, as per the latest NCRB report. Contrarily, in Haryana, while the number of fatalities exceeded those in Punjab, road accidents caused more injuries than deaths, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

Typically, road accidents lead to more injuries than deaths; however, the data reveals that in certain states like Punjab, they result in a higher number of fatalities than injuries. In Punjab in 2022, there were 6,122 road accidents causing 4,688 deaths and 3,372 injuries. In the preceding year, 6,097 road accidents resulted in 4,516 deaths and 3,034 injuries. For Haryana, there were 10,049 road accidents reported in 2021, rising slightly to 10,654 in 2022.

In Haryana, 4,983 people died in road accidents in 2021, increasing to 5,228 in 2022. The accidents caused injuries to 7,972 and 8,353 people, respectively, in the two years. The NCRB data emphasizes that accidents serve as indicators of traffic bottlenecks and hindrances, prompting the collection of detailed data for planners to devise preventive strategies.

In 2022, 660 people died, and 1,398 were injured in road accidents involving light motor vehicles in Haryana, while Punjab saw 1,101 deaths and 861 injuries in the same category. In both states, injuries and fatalities involving two-wheeler riders were notably high. Haryana has introduced transformative projects to enhance road safety, including integrating a fleet of 670 ambulances with the ‘112’ emergency helpline to provide timely medical assistance to accident victims. Punjab is establishing a specialized force, the Sadak Surakhya Force (Road Safety Force), within the state police to streamline traffic and reduce road accidents. Additionally, a collaborative project in Haryana by the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety and IIT-Madras aims to integrate best practices, develop systems, and offer data-driven advice for road safety.
