SC Orders Delhi Govt to Improve Infrastructure for District Judiciary Construction

Responding to concerns about judicial infrastructure, the Supreme Court has issued a recent order instructing the Delhi Government to initiate tenders for the construction of specific judicial infrastructure in the city. The three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dr. Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, acknowledged the pressing need for increased court capacity, accommodation for judicial staff, and other challenges faced by the Delhi High Court. The bench directed the Chief Secretary of GNCTD to provide updates on steps taken for residential accommodation for judicial officers, the recruitment of district-level staff, and the provision of additional courtrooms on a temporary basis in the next hearing scheduled for February 5, 2024.

In light of the infrastructural challenges faced by the Delhi High Court, a meeting chaired by the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court was convened, attended by senior officials, including the Chief Secretary of GNCTD and Principal Secretary (Law). The Supreme Court ordered the GNCTD to file an affidavit by January 31, 2024, confirming the initiation of tenders for the specified judicial infrastructure. Additionally, a review meeting is scheduled for January 12, 2024, focusing on residential accommodation, staff recruitment, and temporary courtrooms, with the Chief Secretary providing updates on the decisions made during the December 12, 2023 meeting.
