India records 702 new Covid cases

India reported 702 new COVID-19 cases in a single day, bringing the total active cases to 4,097, according to the health ministry’s update on Thursday. In the same 24-hour period, six new fatalities were reported, with two from Maharashtra, and one each from Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, and Delhi.

The country experienced a drop in daily cases to double digits by December 5, but the numbers have risen again, likely due to the emergence of a new variant and colder weather conditions. At the peak of the pandemic in early 2020, daily cases were in the lakhs, resulting in over 4.5 crore infections and more than 5.3 lakh deaths over approximately four years.

The number of individuals who have recovered from the infection exceeds 4.4 crore, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as indicated on the ministry’s website. The website further reports that 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered across the country.
