India reports 573 new COVID-19 infections, 2 deaths

India has reported 573 fresh cases of COVID-19, leading to an increase in the number of active cases, which now stands at 4,565, according to the Union health ministry’s update on Tuesday. Over the past 24 hours, two new fatalities due to the disease were reported, one each in Karnataka and Haryana, as per the ministry’s data. Despite a period of double-digit daily cases until December 5, there has been a resurgence in numbers, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and colder weather conditions.

At the peak of the pandemic, daily cases were in the lakhs. Since its onset in early 2020, the country has witnessed more than 4.5 crore infections and over 5.3 lakh deaths in approximately four years. The number of individuals who have recovered from the disease has surpassed 4.4 crore, resulting in a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as indicated by the ministry’s website. Furthermore, the country has administered a total of 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines, as per the information available on the website.
