Man sentenced to 106 years in jail for raping mentally challenged girl in Kerala

A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to 106 years in prison for raping and impregnating a 15-year-old girl with mental health issues in Idukki, Kerala. However, he will serve only 22 years in prison as the sentences will run concurrently. The man, a friend of the victim’s mother, was found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and was also fined Rs 60,000.

The incident occurred in 2022 when the accused, who was working at a hotel with the girl’s mother, began living with them and started sexually abusing the girl when she was alone. He threatened to kill her if she revealed the incidents to anyone. The abuse came to light when the girl’s mother took her to the hospital due to physical difficulties, and the doctor discovered she was pregnant.

The pregnancy was aborted at Idukki Medical College Hospital, and DNA testing confirmed the accused was the father of the unborn child. The court ordered that the fine amount be paid to the girl as compensation if the accused pays it. The case was handled by Special Public Prosecutor Smiju K Das, and the court’s verdict is seen as a strong message against such heinous crimes.
