First transgender to get hired in an MNC, journey of Zara the optimist

She left her job in Dubai and came out revealing her identity as transgender. However, Zara Sheikha could not let life’s challenges fail her anyhow.

She was not alone in this battle against the so-called stereotyping society. She had a well-built circle of friends. When she was appointed as HR executive in UST Global, her joy met no boundaries. Zara was the first transgender to earn an MNC job.

She attended many interviews after returning from Abu Dhabi, however, no one was ready to appoint her because she is a transgender. She never wanted people to accept her as a male or female, she likes it how she was born.

“The company was ready to offer me a job accepting my transgender status. It was my colleagues’ behaviour that surprised me. When I went to the office the first day, I had a sinking feeling as to how others would look at me. Breaking all those pre-conceived notions, they were happy to accommodate me and they all respected my identity. The company also informed me that I could use the ladies washroom and toilets, which according to me is a great acceptance,” she said.

Zara is a BSc Botany graduate from Kerala University and was working for various companies in other states.

“Wherever I worked earlier, I had hidden my identity. I went to school, college and workplaces as a male, which I was actually not. Though I had hidden my identity, people were able to perceive the behavioural differences and they used to harass and taunt me a lot. I would not like to remember the bitter experiences of the past,” Zara says.

“Now I have a good job. I will have a peaceful life too, I dream that all in my community have a better life,” she signs off.
