Nine killed in Kashmir as vehicle falls into gorge

At least nine people were killed and six others injured on Wednesday when the vehicle they were travelling in slid off the road and fell into a ravine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, police said.

Reports said that the Tempo Traveller fell off the road near Chachi nullah in Jamsalam village resulting in the death of seven people on the spot. Two of the critically injured later died at a hospital.

They added one person was feared to have drowned in the nullah.

“Around 8.45am, a Tempo Traveller on its way from Budhan to Mahore carrying around 14 passengers skidded off the road and fell down near Chachi nullah after the driver lost control of the vehicle,” Reasi senior superintendent of police Tahir Sajjad Bhat said.

Soon after accident locals along with police carried out a rescue operation to retrieve the dead bodies and help the injured. All the passengers were residents of Mahore sub-division. The vehicle had left Budhan around 8 am.

“Initially, locals aided the police in evacuating the passengers from the vehicle. Now, we have sought the army’s help and also requested for a chopper at Mahore for shifting the injured to a hospital in Jammu,” Bhat added.

“The roads in the area are very narrow and laxity even for few seconds can prove fatal. The cause will be known during the course of the investigation,” he added.
