These airlines hikes baggage fee

India’s largest domestic airline, IndiGo, has hiked its excess baggage fee, after SpiceJet, for domestic flyers checking-in more than 15 kg.

The move came after the Delhi High Court set aside the Rs 100 per kg fee cap fixed by the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the excess checked-in baggage of 15-20 kg.

With the new rule, those are not pre-booking excess baggage will need to pay Rs 300 per kg for each kilo beyond the allowed 15 kg.
So, now, pre-booking of five kg extra, to check 20-kg in all, will cost Rs 1,425, as against Rs 500 earlier.

Above the prescribed limit of 15kg, travellers need to shell out Rs 2,850; Rs 4,275 and Rs 8,550, for pre-booking of 10 kg, 15 kg and 30 kg respectively.

Currently, all domestic carriers allow free checked-in baggage up to 15 kg. Only Air India’s economy class domestic flyers can check-in up to 25 kg without any charge.

The hike was very similar with the SpiceJet, both of which have 53 per cent of domestic market share.

Earlier this week, SpiceJet increased the excess baggage fee to Rs 300 per kg from the current level of Rs 100.
