Significance of Param Vir Chakra- The Highest Military Decoration

Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is the highest Military Decoration. Param Vir Chakra means “Weeel of the Ultimate Brave”.

Totally 21 People have been awarded with Param Vir Chakra.20 from Indian Army and one from Indian Air Force.

Design

Param Vir Chakra- was designed by Savitri Bai Khanolkar wife of Major Vikram Khanolkar.

The medal has the State emblem in the center surrounded by 4 copies of VAJRA, the Mythical Weapon of INDRA.

History

INDRA’s Vajra is made from the bones of Rishi Dadhichi. Rishi Dadhichi sacrificed his life by giving his bone to Indra as a Weapon to defeat Asuras. This is treated as a Supreme Sacrifice and hence Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is given to people who has done Supreme Sacrifice in the Battle Field.
