Ghoomar: Director’s tribute to Padmavati, brave Rajput women

The upcoming movie ‘Padmavati’ has gained a lot of popularity in past few months, what with an angry Rajput mob vandalizing the sets, rangoli and placards for the portrayal of incorrect scenes.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali introduces the viewers into the time period of his movies. Through his dance sequences, Padukone comes out a graceful and awe-inspiring protagonist who leaves the viewers breathless. Bhansali has done it again with his latest movie ‘Padmavati’ where Deepika Padukone dances to its first song ‘Ghoomar’.

Ghoomar is a farig traditional folk dance of Rajasthan. The dance is chiefly performed by veiled women who wear flowing attire called ghaghara. The dance typically involves performers pirouetting while moving in and out of a wide circle. The word ghoomna describes the twirling movement of the dancers and is the basis of the dance form Ghoomar. As a traditional dance, Ghoomar often includes traditional songs such as “Gorband”, “Podina”, “Rumal” and “Mor Bole Re”. Songs might be centered on royal legends or their traditions.

According to Rajput rituals, “Ghoomar is also traditionally performed by the new bride when she is welcomed in her new marital home,” tweeted the official page of Padmavati.

The song transports the viewers into the world of the Rajput with the set and music. He had done justice to the Rajput era. The viewers can hardly take off their eye from the gorgeous Deepika decked in the royal traditional jewelry and the beautiful ghaghara.

Deepika comments on ‘Ghoomar’ as the most difficult song sequence that Bhansali and she had to shoot. Well prepared for her role in the film, Padukone begins the production of the film by dancing to the tune of ‘Ghoomar’.

Deepika walks onto the set of Padmavati, as the protagonist with a blush yet teasing looks aimed at her husband Maharawal Ratan Singh who is played by Shahid Kapoor. Deepika spent 12 days rehearsing the Ghoomar number and four days actually performing it on camera. About 60 chorus dancers, all trained Ghoomar exponents, performed alongside Deepika.

Wanting to retain the authenticity of the Ghoomar, Deepika performed the subtle and intricate dance moves the way the royalty did, not the way films portray.

“The shooting of Padmavati began with The Ghoomar Song and I will never forget that day. I remember approaching my mark for the first shot and suddenly I felt a chill run through my body. It was almost as if Padmavati‘s soul had entered my body. That feeling still lingers and will continue for years to come”, commented Deepika.

Movie director Sanjay Bhansali says: “We wanted the Ghoomar to retain its purity since this was being performed by Rani Padmavati. Every step and every move in the dance form celebrates the ethereal grace of royalty. This is our dance tribute to the brave Rajput women of Rajasthan.”

The song is sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Swaroop Khan. Choreographed by Kruti Mahesh Midya and Ghoomar training by Jyothi D Tommaar; and will be played on a loop in the months to come.
