Sindhu and Nehwal to face each other at National Championship Finals

The 82nd Senior National Badminton Championships 2017 on the 8th of November will witness a grand final between two Olympic medalists P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal.

Olympic silver medalist Sindhu dismantled Ruthvika Shivani G 17-21, 21-15, 21-11 in the last-four match of the women’s single event.

In another women’s singles event Nehwal knocked out 21-11 21-10 Anura Prabhudesai to set a dream final happening for the first time in the history of Senior National Badminton Championships.

In men’s singles event, Srikanth, who is enjoying being world rank 2 with his rich vein form, sided Lakshya Sen 21-16 21-18 to set the stage for final against second seeded Prannoy who outclassed Subhankar Dey 21-14, 21-17 in the last four match.

In the men’s category Kidambi Srikanth is placed against H.S. Prannoy, a repeat of their French Open semifinal encounter just last week.

The fact that all four players were given direct entry into the pre-quarterfinals of the nationals means they are relatively fresh, having played just three matches each heading into the final. Indeed, only Prannoy (against Chirag Sen in the last 16) and Sindhu (against Ruthvika Shivani Gadde in the semis) have had to play a decider. As such, the finals can be played as a single match with little concern about having to recover for another day.

Saina has a workmanlike style that breaks down opponents with work rate if not brilliance. It is a style that in the absence of speed and a single killer stroke might not succeed against Sindhu’s reach and power. The drifty indoor stadium where matches are being played will likely affect Saina’s game the most, compared to the other three who mostly favor hitting the shuttle into the court. Srikanth and Prannoy will likely be a closer match. Both have finishing power, although Srikanth is the more deceptive player at the net. However, Prannoy has the habit of committing too many errors in his pursuit of the white lines and success for him will be determined by his unforced error count on Wednesday.

PV Sindhu vs. Saina Nehwal Senior National Badminton Championship Final is scheduled to take place around 5pm on Wednesday. Other finals will be played on the same day beginning 2 pm. Senior National Badminton Championship final will be shown live on DD Sports.
