Schools and professional colleges closed in Kerala

There have been drastic changes in the weather condition the southern part of India. Here are the details of the reports of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday put the southern districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu on high alert as a heavy depression formed in the Indian Ocean was fast turning into a cyclonic storm ‘OCKHI’.

Heavy rains lashed the southern districts of Kerala and disaster management authorities have issued a warning and asked people to remain indoors. In Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts, educational institutions were shut down.

There were reports of many landslides in the hilly regions.

The weather office has predicted rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala during next 24 hours and isolated heavy rains over interior Tamil Nadu and Kerala during subsequent 24 hours.

It added power and communication lines could be damaged by breaking branches and uprooting of trees in south Kerala’s Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram districts and adjoining districts of south Tamil Nadu such as Kanyakumari, Tutukudi and Tirunelveli.

Thatched houses could also be damaged to thatched houses with “major damage to kutcha houses and minor damage to pucca roads”. Paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards could also be affected.

Fishermen have been advised not to go out into the sea along and off south Tamil Nadu coast during next 24 hours and along and off south Kerala coasts during next 48 hours.
