Crackdown on anti-government demonstrations escalates in Iran

A lawmaker in Iran (Mahmoud Sadeghi) has claimed that about 3,700 people were arrested by the security forces for participating in anti-government protests. This number is far higher than the officially released ones.

The protests that are going on in Iran is viewed as the largest such protest since 2009 when there were disputes regarding the presidential election.

So far as per official records, 21 people were killed in clashes between protesters and security forces.

Human rights activists outside of Iran told The Associated Press they weren’t surprised by the figure as authorities also allegedly carried out so-called “preventative arrests” of students not involved in the protests. Some 4,000 arrests followed the 2009 protests.

Human rights activists have also expressed worry over the inhuman conditions that are prevalent in Iranian prisons and also pointed out that systematic torture and rape are a common thing at the overcrowded prisons in Iran.

Similar mass arrests followed the Green Movement protests over voter fraud allegations in the 2009 re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a crackdown that saw dozens killed and others tortured in custody. Rape accusations levied against jailers at the time stunned Iran.

There are also allegations that University students were also arrested separately though they have not taken part in the demonstration.
