And she lives! Despite all odds chocolate-sized baby girl survives

Giving birth to a child is a painful and joyous occasion that shows a new world, a miracle itself. Those who don’t believe in miracles should read this.

She was born 12 weeks prematurely as her mother suffered complications, weighed just 400 grams – like a bar of Cadbury chocolate – and arrived in the world with a foot measuring the size of her father’s thumbnail. And yet survived.

Her parents have a reason to celebrate their baby’s survival, who doesn’t cease to make them wonder. She was recently discharged from hospital after six months.

Doctors say Manushi, the baby born on June 15 at a hospital in India, is progressing well – her brain is structurally normal and her eyes are developing normally, an international report has revealed.

The 48-year-old Seeta needed an emergency cesarian operation before delivering her baby. Her husband, 50-year-old Giriraj, said she was their real-life miracle. The report quotes the couple as saying: “She’s just fought and fought and fought against all the odds, but she’s made it.”

Seeta’s blood pressure zoomed, and doctors knew this would pose risk to Manushi. She was born at 28 weeks and was just 8.6 inches long. Manushi was not breathing and had underdeveloped organs. After seven weeks, the girl was able to take milk.

Dr. Sunil Janged, chief neonatologist, was quoted in the report: “When the baby was born, we were uncertain of what could happen. She was struggling to breathe, so was immediately put on advanced respiratory support ventilator to expand her tiny, immature lungs. She could not be fed adequately due to the immaturity of her gut.”

“Her treatment should have cost one million rupees (around Dh58,000), but doctors charged a nominal fee due to the family’s low income,” Janged said.
