Israel military downs plane; Syria retaliates

Israel and Syria share bilateral ties between them. The two countries have since the establishment of the State of Israel been in a state of war.

Syria and Iran, however, are strategic allies. Syria is usually called Iran’s “closest ally”, with the ideological conflict between the Arab nationalist ideology of Syria’s secular ruling Ba’ath Party and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s pan-Islamist policy notwithstanding.

The Israeli military says it has shot down an Iranian drone that infiltrated the country and has struck Iranian targets in Syria that launched it.

The military says that as part of the unusual event early Saturday one of its F-16 jets crashed in northern Israel.

The military says the pilots abandoned the aircraft and were safe. It says sirens sounded in northern Israel as a result of the anti-aircraft fire from Syria.

Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said Iran was “responsible for this severe violation of Israeli sovereignty.”

Syrian air defenses opened fire in response to an Israeli act of “aggression” against a military base on Saturday and hit “more than one plane”, Syrian state media cited a military source as saying.

“The Israeli enemy entity at dawn today conducted a new aggression against one of the military bases in the central region. Our air defenses confronted it and hit more than one plane,” the unidentified military source said.
