Can Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth repeat their success stories in politics?

Tamil Nadu has been witness to a number of shocking events in the field of politics in the past one year. The state witnessed yet another surprise development on Sunday afternoon as two of the biggest actors in Tamil cinema and latest political entrants Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan had a meeting at the former’s residence at Poes Garden in Chennai.

Right from the moment the news spread, each and everyone began waiting anxiously for the outcome of the meeting. In fact, the whole Tamil Nadu was waiting for the words of their favourite stars which may be a hint to their plans to join hands in politics. The meeting, that lasted for less than 15 minutes, came just days ahead of Mr Haasan’s official entry into politics which is slated to happen on February 21st. The actor plans to reveal the name and flag of his party at a public meeting going
to be held in Madurai.

After the meeting, both the actors separately met the media and rubbed off the rumours. Rajinikanth said that even in cinema, both their styles have been different and this can be expected in politics too. However, the actor quickly added that though their styles may be different the aim will be the same, that is to do good for the people of Tamil Nadu. Rajinikanth who also wished success to Kamal said that the latter is someone whose intention is only to do good for the people than
fame, power and money.

On the other hand, Kamal Hassan said that the meeting was a friendly one and not related to politics. Kamal said that he met Rajini as he wanted to meet his dear ones for starting his political journey. Kamal also invited Rajinikanth to the former’s party meeting in Madurai.

The entry of the two biggest stars will surely make Tamil Nadu politics more glamorous. However, the effectiveness of their political entry is to be wait and watched. But according to political experts, the two stars will find it hard to make it big in politics like their predecessors, MGR and Jayalalitha. Even the thespian actor Sivaji Ganeshan who followed MGR and entered into politics failed to succeed in politics. In fact, no actors after MGR and Jayalalitha were able to convert their
popularity as stars into votes.

On the other hands, few experts believe that the situation is quite favourable for the two actors. According to them the political situation in Tamil Nadu is not stable. The ruling AIADMK is facing serious internal disputes after the demise of Jayalalitha. On the other hand, the opposition party DMK does not appear strong enough after the apparent retirement of their leader Karunanidhi. Also, neither the BJP nor the Congress has been influential among the Tamil people in order to become the ruling party in the state. All this appears provides favourable situations to the two veteran actors who are already influential among the Tamil population.
