Yet another controversy by CM; questions Diana Hayden ‘Miss World’ title

Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked his party men to not make controversial remarks, only for it to be broke the second time.

Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Deb is at it again.

Barely days after the row over his controversial remark that internet existed during the Mahabharata, Deb has triggered a fresh controversy by questioning how Diana Hayden could win the Miss World title.

“International beauty pageants like the ones held in Paris are nothing but a marketing mafia. They make women walk on ramp wearing their fabric. It’s all done by the international textile market mafia. They decide beforehand who should be crowned which year,” Deb said while addressing an event for handloom artisans at Prajna Bhavan in Agartala.

Questioning the selection process for international beauty pageants, Deb said such events are run by cosmetics giants with an aim to capture developing markets in countries like India.

“For five consecutive years, Miss World and Miss Universe titles were awarded to India. Anybody who participated was crowned, even Diana Hayden got it [says with a laughter],” he said.

The chief minister added, “Tell me, did she [Diana] deserve it? People might say Biplab Deb is creating a controversy. I can understand Aishwariya Rai getting it, at least she has traits of an Indian beauty.”

Deb went on to add that “for Indians, Goddess Laxmi and Saraswati exemplify beauty”. “I don’t understand the beauty of Diana Hayden. I am not opposing her, but simply questioning the process,” Deb said.

He made these remarks against the 1997 Miss World and tried explaining “how cosmetic products were an alien concept for millions of Indian women”.

“Indian women were never aware of the use of cosmetics. They wash their bodies with mud, hair with ash or methi water. But ever since liberalization, the international cosmetics mafia spotted a huge market in India.”

“Of the 125 crore Indians, 50% are women and the cosmetic mafia wanted to capture this market,” he said.

To justify his statement, he said that India “suddenly started winning” Miss World and Miss Universe titles for five consecutive years.

“Following this, we saw that there were beauty parlors in every nook and corner of this country, even here in Tripura. It has become an industry. But now there are no more crowns. International cosmetics giants have captured the Indian market and have gone elsewhere in search of new markets,” the new chief minister added.
