At Facebook’s annual developer conference on Tuesday, Mr Zuckerberg revealed that his social networking site is soon going to launch an online dating service. He said that more than 200 million people on Facebook has written “single” in their status and the new service will help people connect with each other using the app. He said the idea behind the dating app is to build long term relationships.

Zuckerberg’s announcement has found reverberations in the share market. Tinder and OK Cupid , the two popular dating apps fell by 22 percent, the largest drop in it’s history. Match suffered a fall of 18 percent but pointed out the growth of Tinder as the reason. It then took a jibe at Facebook by making a joke about the recent controversy that Facebook found itself in.

Zuckerberg made it clear that the new offering was designed prioritising safety and privacy in mind. The dating profile will not be visible to your facebook friends and the talks via dating service will not interfere other apps like whatsapp or messenger. Singles, be thrilled !
