Heavy Polling Recorded in Chengannur By-Election.

Chengannur By-Election has reported a heavy polling  amidst conflicting weather conditions. According to the latest reports, 76.8 percentage polling have been recorded. There are still long queues on most polling station and the final percentage may well inch closer towards 80.  Last year the constituency marked 74.38 percentage attendance of voters, which was also the highest polling marked until then. The current polling rate has already gone past that record.

The election ran smoothly for most part and no major issues have been reported. Minor arguments in certain polling stations were soon solved. In Cheriyanad Panchayat, BJP- CPI(M) conflict was escalating but Police intervened on time before the issue intensified. About 8 places have reported to have minor issues in their voting machine, VVPAT machines were replaced in two stations. In some booths, electricity was snapped for a while that affected the smooth progression of affairs. 

The by election was held following the demise of K K Ramachandran Nair of LDF.  Saji Cheriyan(LDF) , D Vijayakumar (UDF) and P S Sreedharan Pillai(NDA) are the three main contenders among the total 17 candidates. 

D Vijayakumar,after exercising his voting rights said “He is 101 percent sure that he is going to win the election”. Saji Cheriyan felt that the apparent increase in the voting percentage is going to work in favour of LDF. P S Sreedharan Pillai who doesn’t have a vote in this constituency visited a number of booths and said the “response he is getting from people is a good omen for his party”.

The results will be declared on 31st of may.
