A special police team has launched a search for a three-member motorcycle-borne waylaying gang who stabbed two persons demanding money on Wednesday night near Peelamedu in suburbs of Coimbatore.
Police said Babu, 45, daily wage laborer residing near Peelamedu SIHS Colony was stabbed by a three-member gang after he refused to part with money while the gang threatened him at knifepoint.
The incident took place around 9.30 pm on Wednesday night after Babu and his friend Nelson, 48, were returning home after consuming alcohol near Nelikonampalayam.
The gang members had blocked the way of the duo, demanding money at knifepoint as Babu refused and picked a quarrel, only to be stabbed by them.
Hearing Nelson’s screams, motorists who passed that stretch came forward and rushed Babu to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). But he died there without responding to treatment.
In a similar incident, a 22-year-old youth Midhun from Peelamedu-Hudcco Colony was waylaid by a three-member gang around 10.30 pm the same day, who demanded money from him at knifepoint. However, Midhun escaped with minor injuries.
On receiving a complaint from Midhun, police suspect the same gang to have been involved in the alleged murder of Babu.
A special team was formed by city police commissioner K. Periaiah and further investigations are on.
