Sanath Jayasuriya to coach Melbourne club following the end of ICC ban

From the next season, Sanath Jayasuriya will coach a Melbourne club, Mulgrave. The determined suburban club will have the assistance of the former Sri-Lankan cricketer for one year. After a two-year ban for breaching the ICC anti-corruption code in February 2019, this coaching stint will also be Jayasuriya’s return to the game.

“Dilshan opened the door for us there, and it was a fantastic opportunity that was presented to us. We just had to work on it and come to an agreement, and we have,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Mulgrave president Malin Pullenayegam. “I think it’s a great opportunity for our young guys to know what international cricket standards are. That kind of exposure from a young age just elevates the standard of cricket they’ll be playing.”

According to the Herald-Sun report, it was the former Sri-Lankan team-mate Tillakaratne Dilshan who convinced 51-year-old Jayasuriya to make the move to Melbourne. Sanath Jayasuriya will walk in the footsteps of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga, who are already part of the Eastern Cricket Association competition.

Jayasuriya has played 110 Tests and 445 ODIs in his 22-year-long while scoring 42 centuries at the International level.
