Bengal minister on allegations against Mahua Moitra: ‘Efforts to silence her’

On Monday, West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim claimed that Mahua Moitra’s bribery charges against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were ‘efforts to silence her.’ He clarified that he was speaking on a ‘personal level’ and not speaking for the TMC, which has declined to respond to the situation.

Nishikant Dubey, a member of the BJP, accused Moitra of accepting ‘bribes’ from Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for her cooperation in posing inquiries concerning Gautam Adani in Parliament.

I am not the party spokesperson, so I can’t comment on what the party is thinking, the West Bengal minister who is reputed to be Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s close aide stated. On a personal level, I think that they are attempts to quiet her in order to prevent her from criticising the BJP government.

Moitra has launched a defamation lawsuit in response to the claims against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and attorney Jai Anant Dehadrai, who both claimed to have ‘irrefutable evidence’ to support the claims.

Darshan Hiranandani recently asserted in a signed affidavit that Moitra targeted Gautam Adani in order to ‘malign and embarrass Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose impeccable reputation gave the Opposition no opportunity to attack him.’ Hiranandani had previously refuted the allegations.

TMC spokesman Derek O’Brien said that before making a ‘appropriate decision,’ the party leadership would wait for the findings of the parliamentary panel looking into the situation. The TMC, according to the state BJP, is divided over the matter.
