Canadian poet Rupi Kaur rejects White House’s Diwali party invite

Canadian poet Rupi Kaur has made headlines by revealing her decision to decline an invitation from the Biden administration to participate in a Diwali event scheduled for November 8. In a statement posted on a specific platform on November 6, she expressed her refusal to engage with an institution that she perceives as supporting the collective punishment of a civilian population, notably including a significant percentage of children.

Kaur went further in her statement, questioning the apparent contradiction in the Biden administration’s stance. She found it perplexing that they would celebrate Diwali, a festival rooted in the Hindu and Jain traditions symbolizing righteousness over falsehood and knowledge over ignorance, while at the same time offering support for actions involving violence inflicted by Israel on Palestine. She explicitly called out the American government for what she sees as justifying what she terms as a genocide against Palestinians.

In a powerful message, Kaur implored her South Asian community to hold the administration accountable for its actions. She, as a Sikh woman, made it clear that she would not allow her likeness to be used in what she perceives as an attempt to whitewash the administration’s actions.

Rupi Kaur’s decision to decline the invitation underscores the complex intersection of cultural and political issues, where the celebration of a cultural event clashes with concerns about international politics and human rights. It also serves as a reminder of the potential for individuals, including artists and public figures, to use their platform to voice their convictions and stand for what they believe is right.
