Three-Year-Old dies after dental procedure, Family accuses medical negligence

A tragic incident unfolded as a three-year-old boy, who had recently undergone a dental procedure with prior anesthesia administration at a private hospital in Kunnamkulam, passed away while being under observation on Tuesday. The boy’s family, suspecting medical negligence, promptly filed a complaint with the Kunnamkulam police. However, the hospital’s administration vehemently denied any allegations of negligence. The hospital maintained that the boy suffered a cardiac arrest while under observation, and they expressed their willingness to fully cooperate with any ensuing investigation. The young patient, Aaron, who was the son of Kevin and Felja from Mundur, had been admitted to the Malankara Medical Mission Hospital the previous day for the treatment of a dental infection.

Aaron was facing significant challenges in eating due to multiple infected teeth. Since he was already undergoing treatment for other health conditions, the medical professionals recommended the extraction of the affected teeth and the installation of dental caps. Following the initial consultation, the procedure was scheduled for the following Tuesday.

The entire dental procedure concluded by 8:45 am, and the young boy was subsequently transferred to the post-operative Intensive Care Unit (ICU). During this period, he remained unconscious, and access to him was restricted. For approximately three hours, no updates were provided, deeply unsettling the family. Around 11:30 am, one of the boy’s relatives entered the ICU without authorization and discovered Aaron bleeding from his nose and mouth while medical staff administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Sterin, the relative, noted that before the procedure, Aaron’s mother, Felija, who is a nurse, had expressed concerns regarding the administration of anesthesia, given the child’s existing medical condition.
