Exciting Onam bonanza for Gulf expats

Keralite in the Gulf will be able to return home during Onam without prohibitive airfares burning a hole in their pockets if the airline companies and the Centre were to accept the proposal put forward by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

It was at a meeting attended by state and Central officials as well as airline representatives the Chief Minister mooted reducing the surge pricing during the festival season.

Pinarayi disclosed both the Ministry of Civil Aviation(MoCA) and the airlines operating on the sector responded positively to the proposal. This would mean more flights during the peak season, the CM said.

The chief executives of the airline companies urged the state to reduce the value-added tax(VAT) levied on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to increase the number of flights. Responding to the demand, the Chief Minister said the government would look into the demand and a decision on the issue would be taken soon. Currently, the 29 per cent VAT on ATF levied by Kerala is one of the highest in the country.
