Halebidu, Karnataka: A place you should visit once in life

Halebidu in Karnataka is one of the ancient temple towns of South India. The town is untouched by tourist crowds and a beautiful offbeat experience. Known as Dwarasamudra, gateway to the seas, Halebidu is the capital of the Hoysala Dynasty for about 150 years.

The twin Shiva temple has a common platform and two Garbhagrihas, one beside the other have a common broad Navaranga. One of them is Vishnuvardhana Hoysaleshwara Linga and the other Shanthaleshwara Linga. In front of the Hoyasaleswara temple is a mandapa with a huge Nandi image, and behind that is a shrine of Surya with seven horses.

The remarkable structure of this temple has been acclaimed as a perfect exemplar of Hindu style of architecture. Its architecture is often regarded as the ‘supreme climax of Indian architecture’.

In the exteriors, many projections and recesses in the walls make the structure quite complex; in contrast to it, the interiors appear simple. The exterior walls of the temple have a splendid assortment of stone sculptures.
