Things You Should Know Before Having Sex For The First Time

No matter your background, age, or experience, having sex for the first time is a big deal. You can (and should) prepare for it as much as possible, but you still can’t know exactly what it feels like until the deed is done. It might be different than you expected.

Talk about how you would like for it to be

If you and your bae have been talking about having sex, and it is your first time, talk about how you would like it to be – would you want the lights on or off? Petals on the bed (though that can get messy)? Where would you do it? Maybe set a playlist for the event?

Be spontaneous

Losing your virginity doesn’t have to be a planned event. You and your bae may be making out, and things may get hot and steamy. One thing leads to another and you end up having sex. That’s okay.

Focus on foreplay

You don’t just whip and shove. Not the first time. Not ever. Take time to get into the act. Kiss for a long time. Touch each other in places that are not touched. Go slow, but steady and work your way to actual penetration

Sometimes, it takes multiple attempts

It doesn’t always happen the first time you try it, and that’s fine. You may be too nervous, or too tight and need more lubrication. You may need a different technique. Or maybe, you just need more time. It’s okay to have to try multiple times before it actually happens.

Not every woman bleeds

That bleeding is a sign of virginity is one of the most harmful myths propagated by patriarchy. If you have been leading an active life, your hymen may already be torn. Sometimes, it can also tear because of fingering.

You may spot for days after the act

There’s no “normal” time for the virginal bleeding to last. Some women may spot for days after. But, only spotting here and there. If you have full-fledged bleeding after having sex, or spotting that lasts beyond a week, please go see the doctor.

Use lubrication

You may be wet enough, but it is still a good idea to be extra lubricated for your first time. So, before you get to it, make a run to the chemist and invest in a good lubricant

Use a condom

The first time, the second time, every single time, use a condom. Unless you are actively trying to get pregnant.
