Ramadan 2018 : Muslims Add Richness to American Life, says Donald Trump.

Donald Trump is known for many things and being lenient towards Muslim Community is not one of them. Hosting an Iftar meal was a standard white house procedure on Ramadan holiday, but that didn’t happen last year. There seems to be a marked change in his attitude this year though, as the American President sent out a warm statement saying ‘Ramadan reminds us of the richness Muslims add to the religious tapestry of American life.’

It is interesting to remember that he had a much firmer tone in last year’s message where he said ‘Ramadan strengthens awareness of our shared obligation to reject violence’. Add to that the fact that the celebratory iftar , which is a normal tradition in White house during Ramadan holiday, was not held. This time around , White house is thinking about working with the State Department to host an Iftar in early June in collaboration with Ray Mahmood, a prominent muslim real estate developer who is known for his interfaith diplomacy in Washington.

Mahmood said  ‘I think they are very important to the Muslim community. At least they feel the president at the White House is doing this, which shows some tolerance and acceptance’.

‘Trump’s relationship with Muslim Americans was worsened when he proposed banning all Muslims from United States as a security measure against terrorism. He even wanted surveillance in mosques. Trump is probably trying to rework his image and we all hope there is a little more intend behind it to construct genuine harmony among different religions.
