Cyclone Mekunu: Indian Navy deploy two ships to assist Oman

According to reports , The eye of the Cyclone Mekunu is 75 kilometres away from the city of Salalah in Oman. More than 800mm of rain is expected in Salalah and the storm may be upgraded to category 3.

INS Deepak and INS Kochi were dispatched from Mumbai yesterday as first responders to the crisis situation in Salalah, Oman.

The city of Salalah is the second largest in Oman and capital of Dhofar province.The Indian embassy in Muscat shared a post on their Facebook page saying the ships have humanitarian aid material on board and will be on the standby to assist Salalah if required.

The ships have helicopters on board for rescue of personnel.

Back home, Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has issued weather advisories for fishermen asking them not to venture in to in Arabian sea for the next 24 hours. The advisory is regarding ‘Cyclone Menuku’ for Maharashtra-Goa coast. Menuku is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 24 hours, tweeted ANI.
