Six militants killed in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district: Army

Six militants were terminated by the army during they infiltrating into Kashmir through Keran sector near the Line of Control in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the army said on Sunday.

Army soldiers infiltrated in Keran sector and killed six militants, an army official said. The operation is in progress, the spokesman said. The death toll is expected to rise once all terrorists are flushed out.

This is the fourth infiltration bid since the Centre announced Ramzan ceasefire on May 16, and which has resulted in the death of 17 militants.

On June 6, three militants were killed when army foiled an infiltration bid in Machil sector of Kupwara. On May 26, the army had said that five militants were killed while they were attempting to cross the Line of Control (LoC) in Tanghdar. On May 18, three militants were killed close to Line of Control in Handwara forest.

Security forces did not conduct any operation (since the beginning of Ramzan last month) but still, some youths joined terror ranks. We need to look for reasons why the youths are joining militancy and the civil society of Kashmir had a greater role to play and look why the youths are deviating from the right path, he said. Gupta said the central dispensation would never hurt the morale of the security forces.

Most of these militants are believed to be foreigners, except two of the five killed in Tanghdar whose bodies were exhumed and handed over to their heir families from Pulwama and Kulgam.
