Smart Cities Mission installed 43 underground garbage bins with sensors in Surat

The Surat Municipal body has installed 43 underground garbage bins, a part of combat against the excess wastage. Each garbage bin can hold up to 1.5 tonnes of waste. These bins were installed as a part of Smart City Mission. Not only this, the bins are also fitted with sensors to send alerts to the control room as soon as the container is 70 % full.

The underground bins have been placed having two inlets for throwing waste. The two inlets have been placed with keeping in mind the individual as well as the municipal carts bringing collected waste.

The separate inlets will help people to avoid unnecessary littering. There will be 75 bins placed across the city. The programme was started initially in a limited area, later more municipal councillors vouched for participation in the cleanliness scheme. The Municipal Commissioner of Surat City said, “Once people have a good experience and see the result; they will push for better facilities. We will be expanding this to other areas as well.” The Municipal Commissioner M Thennarasan is also the director-chairman of Surat Smart City Project.

Surat generates massive waste in a day, as per a report in The Times of India; Surat generates about 2,100 tonnes of garbage per day. Out of that 2,100 tonnes, about 800 tonnes is processed and treated daily. The metal bins are lifted using the cranes and entire waste is emptied mechanically without human involvement. It also makes sure that the foul smell of the garbage does not spread to the surrounding area.

Surat is also excellent when it comes to treating 57 million litres of sewage every day. Not only this that sewage is later converted into 40 million litres of potable water. Surat city’s municipal body is working not only to manage waste effectively but also to take care of the huge migrant population in the textile and diamond city.
