Hamas: Terrorists or Resistance? Differing Views at Muslim League Event in Kozhikode

At a large pro-Palestine convention organized by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in Kozhikode Beach, the term ‘Hamas’ was notably absent from most speeches. Speakers refrained from mentioning ‘Hamas,’ the Islamist militant group responsible for an attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in over a thousand civilian casualties and triggering a retaliation that has claimed more than 6,000 lives in Gaza.

However, two prominent speakers at the event had contrasting views on the role of Hamas in the ongoing conflict. Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP and the chief guest, unequivocally referred to ‘Hamas’ as a terrorist organization without explicitly naming it. IUML MLA M K Muneer, who spoke later, presented a divergent perspective, also without mentioning the word ‘Hamas.’

Tharoor stated, “On October 7, terrorists attacked Israel,” during his speech, emphasizing the need for peace and providing historical context about the disputed land shared by Jews and Palestinians.

In contrast, Muneer stated, “The British called the freedom struggles waged by Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose as terrorism. In the eyes of tyrants, the resistance in Gaza is labeled as terrorism. Israel is committing genocide, and Palestine is waging
