Hepatitis cases surge in Malappuram, over 300 infected

Allegations of preventive measure failures have emerged in Pothukal, Malappuram, amidst a surge in viral hepatitis cases. Around 350 individuals have been infected over the past two months, raising concerns about the lack of adequate facilities in government hospitals within the Pothukal panchayat. Complaints suggest that despite the rising cases, the health department and panchayat authorities have not effectively implemented prevention activities. The absence of the Medical Officer at the Pothukal Family Health Centre has further intensified worries about the healthcare system’s readiness to tackle the outbreak.

The outbreak of viral hepatitis is particularly severe in Pothukal and Edakkara panchayats of Malappuram district, with three deaths reported in three weeks. Recent reports indicate the demise of a young man in Pothukal, exhibiting symptoms of viral hepatitis. Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of proactive measures by health authorities and the insufficient staffing of doctors at the local hospital. In response to these issues, members of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Pothukal Panchayat have initiated a strike, urging the District Collector to intervene and address the situation promptly.

Viral hepatitis encompasses liver inflammation resulting from infection with various hepatitis viruses, including A, B, C, D, and E. These viruses vary in transmission methods, severity of symptoms, and long-term effects. Symptoms typically manifest within 14-28 days of infection and include jaundice, fever, diarrhea, dark urine, fatigue, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and loss of appetite. The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive public health measures and medical interventions to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread in the affected areas.
