PM-led committee to convene on March 15 for EC appointments

A high-level committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to convene on March 15 to finalize the appointment of new election commissioners, according to reliable sources. The vacancies arose following the resignation of Arun Goel and the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey. The committee, which includes a Union minister and the Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, will meet to name the individuals for the positions.

The appointment of two new election commissioners is expected to be completed by March 15 to fill the vacancies left by Pandey’s retirement and Goel’s resignation. The meeting notice was sent out on Saturday, coinciding with the notification of Goel’s resignation. It is anticipated that two appointments will be made during the meeting, as previously speculated.

Before a recent change in the law, election commissioners were appointed by the president based on government recommendations. The chief election commissioner and election commissioners are appointed by the president, with the senior-most typically serving as the chief election commissioner. The selection process involves a search committee and a selection committee headed by the prime minister.
