Case filed against college professor for molesting first year student

Ten days after a student submitted a written complaint to Matunga college accusing a professor from the college of molesting her, an FIR was registered at Matunga police station on Monday.

In a letter dated May 19 and addressed to the director of the college, the first-year BTech student had said she had approached the professor (who teaches mathematics) on May 18, seeking his signature for a form she had to submit.

She said the man had kept her waiting for two hours starting 3 pm on the day the alleged crime took place. She claimed that when he finally met her, he started to pull her towards him and forced himself upon her. She said the accused had touched her inappropriately.

He also tried to intimidate her by threatening to fail her in mathematics if she refused to ‘cooperate’, but promised to ensure that she passed if she acquiesced to his advances.

In the letter, the student said she left his cabin immediately after this and rushed home. She later returned to campus with her father, met the college director and narrated her experience. She then submitted a written complaint.

According to police, the victim had narrated the incident to the college authorities and on the basis of that, a case was registered after recording the victim’s statement. The matter was further probed to ascertain if the accused also abused other students or threatened them with similar consequences.

“We have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused is yet to be arrested,” said M Kakad, Senior Police Inspector of Matunga Police Station.
